The item for sale is a wonderful early roman period. ANCIENT ORANGE AGATE LUKMI EYE BEAD SEAL or GOATS EYE DZI circa 1000 BC – 300 AD. The Goat’s eye bead is thought to be the first stone bead that human beings wore as a protective amulet. This ancient Orange A gate bead displays a clear defined white crystal eye with orange pupil in the centre, its hard to catch on photograph as its below the immediate surface. This lovely looking small Agate eye bead also known as Luk Mik and displays excellent patina commensurate with its age. It was probably traded through to India, It has a stamp seal intaglio on its base showing twin males with pelleted border. It has has hole running through some deep wear caused by rubbing due to it being worn as a pendant. It measures 19.79 mm in diameter and 17.04 mm high and weighs 9.4 grams approximately. In good collectable condition. Early classic “Evil Eye” beads utilized the natural colour bands of a milky striped orange agate. This ancient bead is naturally banded with concentric crystalline layers forming the eye. These beads were highly valued and traded in ancient Tibet, Himalayan regions , Central and South East Asia. Down on the alluvial plains of the Mesopotamian city states. With an agate like this you cut one way to get stripes or turn the stone round and cut the other way you create concentric circles. These circles are believed to be a powerful deterrent to Evil. The Evil Eye averts its gaze when it meets a threatening eye or a mirror reflecting even its own eyes. It is from these “natural” Eyes that the whole tradition has evolved. Condition: Mostly Very Good. A robust bead with minor. Weathering and superficial surface fissures. Collected in the 1970s. This ia a very unusual variant and extremely rare. It would be a quality addition to any bead collection, a must have for any ancient bead collector, from my personal collection.
