ANCIENT AGATE LUK MIK EYE BEAD or GOATS EYE DZI circa 2000 B. C 300 B. C
ANCIENT AGATE LUK MIK EYE BEAD or GOATS EYE DZI circa 2000 B. The Goat’s eye bead is thought to be the first stone bead that human beings wore as a protective amulet. This ancient A gate tabular bead displays b rown Brown and white banding and is known as Luk Mik Dzi or Goat’s eye / seeing bead. This lovely heirloom Agate eye bead also known as Luk Mik and displays excellent patina commensurate with age only found on beads of this great age. Probably placed on a statues hand by the wear present. It has an outer concentric toned white agate circle and a large grey/brown eye to the centre. The base displays a large brown eye with wear expected on the surface of the bead. The bead has a hole running through both holes are worn from ancient use. It measures 36 mm in diameter and 12.5 mm high approximately. In good collectable condition. Early classic “Evil Eye” beads utilized the natural colour bands of a milky striped agate. This ancient bead is naturally banded with a concentric crystalline layer forming the eye. These beads were highly valued and traded in ancient Tibet, Himalayan regions , Central and South East Asia. Down on the alluvial plains of the Mesopotamian city states. With an agate like this you cut one way to get stripes or turn the stone round and cut the other way you create concentric circles. These circles are believed to be a powerful deterrent to Evil. The Evil Eye averts its gaze when it meets a threatening eye or a mirror reflecting even its own eyes. It is from these “natural” Eyes that the whole tradition has evolved. Condition: Mostly Very Good. A robust bead with. Weathering, surface fissures, excessive wear to bead holes. Collected in the 1980s. It would be a number 1 bead to any bead collection, a must have for any ancient bead collector, from my personal collection. Certificate of Authenticity provided.
